Gertie Williams
Died March 24, 2009
It was with deep sadness that we heard of the passing of Gertie. She was involved in the lives of our family for over 50 years and we all share many fond memories of her. She started work for our late grandmother Jenny in 1955 and remained with her until her death in 1980. She remained in contact with our family until her own death. She watched us all grow up, get married, have kids and outlived our grandmother, uncle Ruby and our mother Goulda. She was our last link to 21 Virginia Avenue in Vredehoek and many happy memories.
Despite having had rheumatic fever which left her with a narrow mitral heart valve she did remarkably well. She even outlived many of the professors at Groote Schuur Hospital who looked after her. She enjoyed helping many young medical students in their training and this includes two of us.
She knew her sports and loved rugby. She was an amazing cook and knew more about Jewish cooking than most Jewish women.
She spoke English, Afrikaans and even a little Yiddish.
We were her extended family and each of Jenny Ospovat's granchildren had a very special place in her heart. Even through all the years and miles which separated her from us, she did her best to keep up with all our lives.
We will all miss her. She was a very special person in our lives and we will never forget her.
We thank you Jackie for the care you have given her and for allowing our words to be heard at her funeral. We wish you all strength during this difficult time.
Heaven has another Angel.
